Thesis Title: Induction Tempering to Enhance the Strength/Toughness Combination of Ultra High Strength Plate Steel
Degree Plan: Master of Science
Completion: December 2025
Group: Plate and Hot Rolled Steels
Steel Center Student Since: January 2024
Bio: Sarah joined the Steel Center after working at Pratt and Whitney as a Design Engineer for hot section components on military engine programs. She earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the Northeastern University in May of 2019 after completing coops in the HVAC, marine engineering, and aerospace industries. Her research focuses on induction heat treatments, and in particular, rapid tempering. The project seeks to understand material behavior under industrial system conditions and attempts to replicate lab findings of increased toughness at short tempering times and fast heating rates when compared to conventionally tempered material.
